The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Bioenergy Technologies Office's Algae Program will host two complementary workshops to discuss research and development (R&D) needed to achieve affordable, scalable, and sustainable algae-based biofuels. The first workshop was held November 19–20, 2013, at Arizona State University. The second workshop will be held for March 26–27 2014, in Charleston, South Carolina.
To highlight the progress made across the industry in the five years since DOE organized the National Algal Biofuel Technology Roadmap workshop, these strategy workshops provide a forum to discuss, reassess, and prioritize technical research and development needs. These workshops convene university, national laboratory, industry, advocacy, and government stakeholders to consider:
The outcomes of these discussions will assist DOE with strategy development, evaluating the National Algal Biofuels Technology Roadmap, and planning a breakout session at the Office's annual Bioenergy Conference in 2014.
The workshops are structured to potentially include facility tours, sessions outlining the Algae Program's goals and research strategies, speaker panels on topics of interest, and facilitated breakout sessions.
