Algal Biofuels Strategy Workshop

  • Wednesday, March 26, 2014
  • Thursday, March 27, 2014
  • Charleston Marriott Hotel 170 Lockwood Boulevard Charleston, SC 29403

The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Bioenergy Technologies Office's Algae Program  will host two complementary workshops to discuss research and development (R&D) needed to achieve affordable, scalable, and sustainable algae-based biofuels. The first workshop was held November 19–20, 2013, at Arizona State University. The second workshop will be held for March 26–27 2014, in Charleston, South Carolina.

To highlight the progress made across the industry in the five years since DOE organized the National Algal Biofuel Technology Roadmap workshop, these strategy workshops provide a forum to discuss, reassess, and prioritize technical research and development needs. These workshops convene university, national laboratory, industry, advocacy, and government stakeholders to consider:

  • Current barriers to algal biofuel commercialization, particularly in the near term
  • Barriers that should be research priorities, possibly contributing to large strides in progress toward near-term goals
  • Appropriate metrics for success
  • State of technology and progress made in achieving success metrics.

The outcomes of these discussions will assist DOE with strategy development, evaluating the National Algal Biofuels Technology RoadmapPDF, and planning a breakout session at the Office's annual Bioenergy Conference in 2014.

The workshops are structured to potentially include facility tours, sessions outlining the Algae Program's goals and research strategies, speaker panels on topics of interest, and facilitated breakout sessions.
