South Carolina Wood Innovation Team's Wood Workshops

  • Monday, May 16, 2016
  • Friday, May 20, 2016
  • Greenville, Columbia, Charleston, SC

The South Carolina Biomass Council has joined the South Carolina Wood Innovation Team which represents the leading organizations in South Carolina that promote the sustainable utilization of wood.  Technical advances in wood products have opened a wide range of process innovations such as computer numerical control (CNC) milling and off-site assembly.  Enhanced wood performance properties in engineered wood products, like cross-laminated timber (CLT), have added new options for use. Building codes are changing to match. Designers are taking a new interest in wood, evaluating not only its aesthetics appeal, but also its structural and environmental value.

I would urge SCBC members to attend one of the workshops (described below) that is most convenient for you. This is another opportunity for the council to participate and have an impact on key issues for biomass.

Clemson University and its partners in the South Carolina Wood Innovation Team are offering a series of day-long workshops in Greenville, Columbia, and Charleston on May 16, 18, and 20, respectively, designed to inform building owners of state, county and municipal buildings; architects; builders; and engineers about the structural, economic, and environmental benefits of using wood in the construction and remodeling of public and commercial buildings. S.C. State Forester Gene Kodama will be among a host of forestry and building industry professionals.

These free, daylong workshops will explore new wood products, building codes, wood-building case studies, economics and other aspects of building non-residential projects using wood. Please see our website for project information as it develops.  For now the website has the draft agenda posted -- http://www.clemson.edu/centers-institutes/wud/sustainable/index.html.

We hope that you will be able to join us for one of these workshops.  We look forward to seeing you there.
